1. Summer officially begins this week (in the northern hemisphere)…what was your favorite thing to do in the summer when you were a kid? What do you like most about summer now?
I loved swimming and since we didn’t have a pool at home or somewhere to go swim, I always swam on vacation.

With that being said, I also loved to travel. My Granddad (who raised me with my Grandmother) was a traveling salesman, so I often went with him. We also went on family vacations most summers.

2. Something you’ll celebrate this summer?
Not sure, we’re celebrating anything this summer other than the 4th of July. Some years we travel on 4th of July (posts listed here) and others we do a party at the in-law’s house.

There’s always a huge water slide…

3. Summer tastes like? Smells like? Sounds like?
Summer tastes like watermelon dripping down your chin, ice cream melting in the sun, the sizzle of burgers on the grill, and homemade salsa fresh from the garden. It smells like sunscreen rich with coconut and banana, mingling with the fresh rain hitting the hot pavement. It sounds like kids shrieking through sprinklers, a screen doors slamming, and soft murmur of offices slowed by the heat.

4. June 18th is National Splurge Day…what’s the last thing you splurged on? What might you splurge on today?
I’m holding off on any splurges since we’ve got a big-ticket backyard project lined up for the summer, hopefully.

5. Share a favorite summer quote, saying, song lyric, or meme.
Luckily we’re not quite to this point yet, but give it time!

Aw, I love the throwback photos! It sounds like you have had some really fabulous summers.

I love the throwback photos. Remember when everyone got Old Navy flag shirts for July 4th? I also said the coconut smell for summer. And I had a similar answer for summer memories. Swimming was a real treat, usually on vacation!

  3. How lovely that you still got to swim as a child! What wonderful photos!
That water slide looks like so much fun!
